Book Summaries:
The Hunger Games
The first book starts with Katniss Everdeen as she is forced to participate in the deadliest game show, surviving night after night of relentless dangers, fighting to the death where there can only be one winner. The book’s significant positive reception led to a movie adaptation released in 2012, featuring Jennifer Lawrence as the fierce Katniss Everdeen.
Catching Fire
The second book in the trilogy follows Katniss as she must make difficult choices after her shocking actions during the finale of the first Hunger Games. Her actions have caused unrest throughout the districts, leading to the announcement of the 75th Hunger Games, where tributes will be selected from the surviving victors of the previous Games.
Mockingjay
The series concludes with Katniss’ rescue from the arena in the haunting Quarter Quell. With District Twelve destroyed and Peeta captured, Katniss is drawn into a revolution where her willingness to be a pawn could change the future of Panem. She must become the symbol of the rebellion— the Mockingjay— at any personal cost.
About the Author:
Suzanne Collins is an American television writer and author, known for works such as The Underland Chronicles and The Hunger Games. The series was inspired partly by the Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur, combined with her father’s career in the Air Force. Common themes in her work encapsulate the brutal effects of war, poverty, and starvation, alongside freedom, family, and friendship.
The film adaptation stars notable celebrities including Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, and Woody Harrelson. In June 2019, Collins announced a prequel titled The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, based on the life of President Coriolanus Snow, 64 years before the events of the first novel.
From the Publisher:
The Hunger Games
In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol keeps the districts in line by forcing them to send one girl and one boy to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen regards it as a death sentence when she is forced to represent her district.
