Clare Mayfield lives in a large Victorian house in Oxford with her two aunts and two lodgers. The house is cluttered with old furniture and memorabilia, resembling a museum. While exploring a junk room, Clare finds a painted shield brought back by her great-grandfather, an anthropologist. Intrigued by its tribal origins, she becomes determined to learn more about its history. As she investigates, she is plagued by dreams of another culture and shadowy figures who seem to be watching her. Clare must uncover the connection between her past and the mysterious shield.
