Stephen King has been a well-known figure in horror and science fiction writing for decades. His first release was Carrie, originally published in 1974, quickly followed by Salem’s Lot in 1975 and The Shining in 1977. From Book to Cinema

No one can forget Jack Nicholson’s performance as the tormented Jack Torrance in Stanley Kubrick's 1980 adaptation of The Shining. Jack’s slow deterioration into madness sparked genuine fear from the audience. The iconic images of the Overlook Hotel are renowned throughout cinema due to King’s creation. The sequel, Doctor Sleep, was published 36 years later in 2013, with a movie adaptation following in 2019, starring Ewan McGregor as a grown-up Danny Torrance, who confronts his past while helping a child with similar powers.

IT created one of the most iconic figures in horror, Pennywise the Clown. Originally published in 1986, it follows the Losers Club as they fight the evil creature. The first half is set in their childhood, while the second half sees them return as adults to finish what they started. IT has been adapted into a TV movie in 1990 and two recent films in 2017 and 2019.

Pet Sematary, released in 1983, has been adapted twice, first in 1989 and again in 2019. The story follows the Creed family in Ludlow, Maine, who discover a pet cemetery that leads to horrific events after their cat is killed.

Stephen King was born in Portland, Maine, and studied English at the University of Maine. His first published novel was Carrie, the first of many bestsellers. King continues to produce bestselling novels, including The Institute (2019), If It Bleeds (2020), and Fairytale (2022). His works have been adapted into films, including Shawshank Redemption and Stand by Me.
