In 1932 Minnesota, the Lincoln School is a harsh institution where Native American children are separated from their families. Odie O’Banion, an orphan known for his mischief, faces the superintendent's anger and decides to escape. He flees with his brother Albert, their friend Mose, and a grieving girl named Emmy. They steal a canoe and embark on a journey down the Mississippi River in search of a place to call home. Over one summer, they meet others who share their struggles and hopes as they navigate their way through challenges and discover the meaning of family.
