Marianne is eight when her mother goes missing, leaving her with a grieving father and baby brother in a neglected home. Discovering a medieval poem called Pearl, she attempts to create a visual illustration of it but struggles to complete the task. Haunted by an unmarked gravestone and the river near her home, Marianne's childhood deteriorates as she seeks solace in art. The story explores themes of grief, loss, and the possibility of healing through creativity.
